Starting forever with the love of your life, screaming Beyoncé on the dance floor with all your fave people, finally having your big main character moment… Yeah, it’s the BEST!! Actually getting there, though? It can feel like a lot. I see couples getting super overwhelmed with wedding planning all the time, so as a NorCal wedding photographer, I’ve created the ultimate guide to planning your California wedding with a ton of wedding planning tips that you won’t want to miss!!

Wedding Planning Tips by Timeline: Everything to Know About the Day

Wedding timelines are HARD if you’ve never made one before. Trying to figure out where everyone has to be at what time?? You’re just a girl!!

Seriously, though, here’s my idea of a good timeline for a traditional California wedding, with wedding planning tips sprinkled throughout each one: 

Getting Ready (Between 9:00 am and 10:00 am)

Typically, my couples start getting ready for the day early in the morning. This is where the vibes are high, excitement (and champagne!) is flowing, and the hype playlist is ON. You’re probably dancing around with your best gals in your satin PJs at this point in the day, and it’s always one of my FAVORITE moments to photograph!! 

Wedding planning tips for getting ready:

• Always eat. Never skip a meal on your wedding day, because food is lifeee, and there’s a good chance you won’t enjoy the day as much if you’re hangry!! 
• Give yourself plenty of time in your timeline. Sometimes, your glam takes longer than you’re expecting!! Always chat with your hair and makeup artists about how much time they’ll need for the people they’re doing, and then add a little bit more wiggle room just in case you need it. 

First Look (Between 1:00 pm and 1:30 pm)

Okay, as a NorCal wedding photographer, I’m always pro-first look. Not only because it gives you SO much more room in the timeline to actually enjoy your day, but also because it’s always the sweetest moment!! There’s something about this time, seeing each other, soaking it all in, and reading your vows just the two of you that feels incredibly special, and I love it every single time. 

After first looks and private vows, I like to hop into couples’ portraits. Taking them at this point in the day always gives us enough time to get the editorial shots of my actual DREAMS, and it isn’t taking you away from anything else that’s happening. 

Wedding Party and Family Photos (Starting Between 2:00 pm and 2:30 pm)

Jumping right into group photos after a first look is my fave way to do things. This gives you the chance to actually go to your cocktail hour instead of taking pictures throughout it, because I want you to experience every part of your day!! 

Wedding planning tips for the wedding party and family photos: 

• Give me a photo list of shots you definitely want with everyone’s names. Being able to call them out eliminates a LOT of confusion and lets us get through this part way quicker!! 
• You also have the option of doing immediate family photos here and then doing larger group family photos after the ceremony, if you’d prefer that some people wait to see you guys after you tie the knot. 

Ceremony (4:00 pm)

The BEST part of the day, by far, is your ceremony. Getting to say “I do” and share your first kiss, surrounded by the love of all your best people?? It brings a tear to my eye behind the camera EVERY time!! 

I love that wedding ceremonies can be as long or as short as you want, but my top tip always is to make it feel true to you. It can be fun and a little nontraditional, or totally classic and by the book! 

Cocktail Hour (Starting Around 4:30 pm)

Cocktail hour is always a ton of fun. Cocktails are flowing, and your live band is playing while you’re getting to chat with your guests before there’s some more structure in the reception. 

Wedding planning tips for cocktail hour: 

• I always suggest that my couples take a little bit of time to be alone together between the ceremony and cocktail hour, just to be together one-on-one, away from the noise. 
• Have signature drinks! It’s always a detail that I LOVE to capture, and it infuses so much personality into your day!!
• Consider the flow of the day when planning your cocktail hour location. Think about how your venue is set up and find the best way for guests to move from your ceremony to your cocktail hour to your reception. 

Reception (Starting Around 5:30 pm)

If you’re anything like me… The party is what you’re here for. Switching into your sparkly reception dress, ready to tear up the dance floor?? Yeah. I love you already!! 

My favorite timeline for a wedding reception is entrance, special dances, dinner + toasts, then dancing, but you can truly do it any way you want!! There’s no real structure to follow here, just be sure to include any of the traditions that you want to, like cake cutting, bouquet tossing, etc. 

The Best NorCal Wedding Venues

The vibe of the whole day will be set by your venue, and luckily… We have some hella good ones in NorCal!! Here are some of my absolute favorites, broken down by region:

Sacramento Wedding Venues

• Cavaignac, A Country Estate – if you’re going for romantic, European estate vibes, you’ll love Cavaignac as much as I do (which is a LOT). See more info about this Sacramento wedding venue from my full planning guide!! 
• Grand Island Mansion – invented luxury. This is one of my faves, hands-down, and you can see a timeless wedding I captured there right here. 
• Hidden Grove – this is one that’s sweet + romantic, and in my opinion, perfect for an outdoor, intimate wedding. 

San Francisco Wedding Venues

• Filoli Historic House and Garden – for spring and summer garden weddings… This is the one. You can see some engagement photos I captured here to get familiar with the property!!

• Mendocino Headlands State Park – a perfect spot for a California elopement with the most gorg coastal views!! 
• Cuffey’s Cove – this one is a charming, coastal ranch that’s PERFECT for intimate weddings.

The Best Season to Get Married in Northern California

Northern California is one of those places that has good weather year-round. And that’s one of the reasons I love being a NorCal wedding photographer SO much!! Here’s my breakdown of getting married in each season in California: 

Winter Weddings in Northern California (November-February)

Winter weddings are always SO cozy. I love seeing candlelit receptions, subtle seasonal decor, and jewel tones everywhere!! NorCal gets into the low 40s on winter nights, so days aren’t so cold that you won’t be able to stand it! 

As far as wedding planning tips for a winter wedding, I always suggest an indoor reception. It doesn’t get too chilly, but you’ll definitely want to have the option of having your guests inside so that no one freezes!! 

Spring Weddings in Northern California (March-May)

Spring weddings might just be my fave as a NorCal wedding photographer, but I love the longer days, the mild temps, the soft lighting, and the blooming flowers!! Garden venues like Filoli work really well for spring weddings in NorCal. 

Summer Weddings in Northern California (June-August)

Summer definitely gets warm in California, but weddings in these seasons still carry their own kind of magic. The sunsets in the summer are truly INSANE, so if golden hour photos are important to you… Yeah. Go for the summer. 

I love Napa Valley weddings in the summer because they just have that really effortless outdoor party feel, so if that’s you, I recommend summertime for sure!! 

Fall Weddings in Northern California (September-October)

Okay, the fall foliage in NorCal is to die for. The rich tones are EVERYTHINGGG, and they look so good for weddings at somewhere like Switzer Farm!! Autumn in California has milder temperatures than the summer, and who doesn’t love that crisp fall air?? 

California Elopements vs California Weddings: Which is Right for You? 

If you’re reading these wedding planning tips and kinda thinking, “Oh… This sounds like a lot…” I get it. Planning a big wedding takes a LOT of coordination, and that’s one of many reasons that my couples are gravitating towards intimate weddings!! 

Elopements or micro-weddings always get a yes from me. I love the intention behind smaller wedding days, and there are SO many good locations to choose from for a California elopement, like San Francisco City Hall or even right at home in your backyard!!

Trying to decide what you want can be tricky, but here are a few wedding planning tips to help you decide: 

• Think about your TOP priority for the day – is your focus on throwing a party with all your favorite people to celebrate your love, or to keep it more lowkey and focus on the actual ceremony part? 
• Consider who you two are – do you two thrive in a crowd, or are you more shy and typically keep to yourselves? 
• Think about stress – if planning a big wedding sounds like your personal nightmare… Go for the elopement, babe!! 

Still stuck between the two options? Consider an elopement for just the two of you, then a bigger party afterwards!! 

California Wedding Rules: The Legal Side

Okay, okay… Unfortunately, wedding planning isn’t all just, “What dance songs should I add to the playlist?” and “What color should my bridesmaids wear??” It’s a lot of logistics, too. Don’t worry, though. I’ve got you covered with all the wedding planning tips you need pertaining to the legal side of things!! 

Getting Your California Marriage License

The first rule that you always have to follow is to get your marriage license within 90 days of your ceremony. You’ll have to go to the County Clerk’s Office of the county you’re getting married in and follow their specific rules, but it usually looks like bringing each of your IDs, your SSNs, and a form of payment. 

Choose Your Witness

In California, you only have to have one witness who can sign your marriage license to get married. Most of my couples choose someone like a parent or a maid of honor to do this, but it can be anyone you want!! 

Permits

Permits for weddings will be location-specific, so always check if you’ll need one if you’re saying “I do” outside of a traditional venue.
