What to Wear to Your Burney Falls Engagement Photoshoot
Your outfit totally depends on the season and what you want your photos to look like. The #1 priority is comfort, so make sure you wear something that you can move in! And if you want to get photos swimming in the lake that’s in a different spot of the park, make sure to dress for that (and know that I LOVE your energy).

Do You Have to Hike to Get to the Waterfalls?
Nope! As someone who is NOT a cardio fan, I’m thrilled any time I book a Burney Falls engagement photoshoot, because it’s super accessible from the parking lot.🤣 There are a few different areas in the park (like a small beach at Lake Britton) that we can trek over to, though, if you’d like some variety in location!
Do You Need a Permit for Engagement Photos at Burney Falls?
Unless you’re planning a commercial photoshoot or a wedding here, a permit is not needed! So for your engagement photos, we are all set without you having to worry about filling out and paying for a permit application. Cue the sigh of relief.
Are There Any Fees for Taking Photos at Burney Falls?
While there’s no entrance fee or fee to take photos, there IS a parking fee of $10, so make sure you come prepared with that!
What to Bring to Your Burney Falls Engagement Photoshoot
Every good photoshoot starts with a plan, and as a Northern California engagement photographer, I’ve come up with the pro guide on what you need to bring for a successful session:
- Water and snacks, because no one wants to be hangry or dehydrated in their pics.
- Outfit changes, if that’s your vibe (or if you’re indecisive like me 🤣)
- Champagne as a photo prop because, duh, it’s a celebration!
- A towel, in case you decide you want to get some shots in the lake, which I’m sooo here for.
- Any special prompts you want, like flowers, signs, parasols, ring boxes, etc.!
When to Take Burney Falls Engagement Photos
The Best Time of Year
Like I said before, it’s gorgeous here year-round. Of course, the weather will be a bit chillier from November-April-ish, but that can make for some cozy sessions, which I’m all for! My favorite time of year here, personally, is during the summer. It’s a bit warmer, but the waterfall inevitably WILL splash on you at least a little bit, which will cool you down a little! But the light dances beautifully on the water, the days are longer, and something about a summer vibe at a waterfall photoshoot just feels right.
The Best Time of Day
Burney Falls is open from 8:00 am to sunset, so I always recommend heading there a few hours before sunset to capture that perfect lighting. Note that it is definitely busier on the weekends, so I’ll always try to get my clients to go on a weekday if possible, to avoid the crowds!
