Waterfront wedding locations steal my heart every time. I mean, the Northern California coast?? It’s something REALLY special, and if you’ve ever been here… You know it hits different. So, if that’s the kind of energy you want on your wedding day, you can NOT miss these Northern California wedding locations with waterfront views and coastal vibes.

Let’s just start with the fact that the Northern California coastline is like… Hella cinematic. That beauty is unmatched!! The way the light hits the ocean and that soft breeze? Yeah. I’m obsessed every time.
This kind of wedding is probably just right for you if you…
So, if your dream wedding looks something like a summer ceremony, saying “I do” under the sun with that GORG coastline behind you… These locations are gonna be perfect for you!!

Before we really get into it, let’s talk about what you need to know for your pre-planning era. This is everything you really need to consider before planning your NorCal waterfront wedding:
Some of these waterfront wedding locations will require permits, and I always recommend checking with the local government for specific areas!!
You’ll always want to be prepared for the weather, which could be rain, crazy heat, or even coastal fog. My top tip, though? Embrace it!! When you know how to work around it (which I definitely do… I’m a NorCal wedding photographer!!), you can get some really cool, really editorial shots in any kind of weather.
If you’re choosing somewhere like a beach or park instead of a traditional venue, consider any guests in wheelchairs or with disabilities when you’re picking the perfect waterfront wedding location.
Another thing to consider for your guests: the nearby parking areas. If needed, you can always add a ‘lil section about carpooling on your invites.
Again, some of these locations may have unique rules. Always check with the local government before making your final plans so you know exactly how to plan your day!!

Big Sur is an actual dream. The mountains, the cliffs, the forests, and the rock formations along the coastline are iconic, and there’s something about the way it looks altogether that feels like you’re in a music video.
This waterfront wedding location is a good fit for couples who want some variety in their gallery, a more intimate wedding, and a whole lot of moodiness. Because Big Sur?? It’s giving drama.
While there aren’t a ton of actual wedding venues in Big Sur, there are a ton of waterfront wedding locations PERFECT for an elopement!! Here are a few of my favorite spots for a Big Sur wedding:

If you’re one of my girlies who prefers vibrant over moody, Carmel is gonna be a better fit for you!! It’s romantic, it’s charming, and if I’m honest… It’s kind of something out of a Hallmark movie (in the BEST way!!).
Weddings here always just feel fun and upbeat, so if you’re dreaming of a day that feels easy and just cool, don’t write off Carmel-by-the-Sea!!

Bodega Bay is forever one of my favorites. There’s something about intimate weddings here that just feels right, and days always have a really effortless feel here. It’s one of those places where time seems to stand still, and it just lets your happy moments thrive!! And don’t even get me started on the views here because… They’re insane.
Again with Bodega Bay, there aren’t a TON of classic, traditional wedding venues around, which makes it a better spot for smaller weddings. Here are a few waterfront wedding locations in Bodega Bay that I can’t get enough of, though:

Okay… Half Moon Bay is one of my favorite NorCal areas. It’s one that feels relaxing and elegant all at the same time, and beach weddings here?? GORG!!
Half Moon Bay is for the people who want something serene and super laidback, and the area fits that energy SO well.

Mendocino?? It brings the DRAMAAA. And if I’m honest, I couldn’t love it more!! This one is my grand finale because it has everything. Picture the vibrancy of Carmel, the moodiness of Big Sur, and the effortlessness of Bodega Bay, and that’s Mendocino.
You can hold any kind of day here, and it’ll fit perfectly, so it’s one of those places that work well for any kind of couple.

Each of these Northern California wedding locations has its own unique vibe, and figuring out the one that fits yours best is always the best way to choose!! If you want something that feels relaxed and super beachy, Half Moon Bay is gonna be the way to go. If you want something more cinematic, it’s probably Mendocino!!
As a Northern California wedding photographer, though, I’m always happy to help you figure out which location fits you the best. We can always plan together, queen!!

Still have some questions before committing to these waterfront wedding locations? I’ve got you!!
Q: What’s the best time of year for a NorCal waterfront wedding?
A: Summer, 1000%. The weather is always INCREDIBLE, the days are long, and the sun hits justtt right for dreamy, nostalgic portraits. I’m always a summer girlie at heart!!
Now, I can’t lie, every other season is pretty dreamy too. Here’s a quick breakdown of the others:

Q: What happens if it rains at my waterfront wedding?
A: Most venues have a rain plan, whether it’s swapping to an indoor ceremony or setting up a tent. Everything works out, and honestly… The rain photos we can get on the coast!! Chef’s kiss.
Q: What kind of wedding dress should I wear for a waterfront wedding?
A: My top recommendation will always be something that flows in the wind. Anything with a chiffon fabric, like Kimora by Evie Young or a slip dress like Harlyn by Jenny Yoo, always works well for coastal weddings!!

Q: Can you legally get married on the beach in California?
A: Yes!! The laws for each area will be a little bit different, and some may require a permit, so always triple check your location first.
Q: What time of day is best for coastal weddings?
A: If you’re planning an elopement, I’ll always recommend morning, but that may not work for some guests. If that’s the case, I’ve found that 4:00 pm ceremonies work great and give your timeline plenty of room to breathe.

If you’re sooo down for a waterfront wedding… Yeah. You’re my kinda person. Let’s chat about your vision together and create a day (and a wedding gallery!!) that feels totally you!! Click here to inquire today.
