Surprise proposals will forever be some of my FAVORITE moments to capture. The pure shock and excitement give me butterflies every time, and Rylie and Zak’s Napa Valley proposal was no different!! How to Plan a Proposal: Romantic Proposal Ideas and Tips from a Napa Valley Engagement Photographer

Chances are, you already have a few super romantic proposal ideas in mind if you’re here. The part that you probably need a little bit of help with is the execution, and I’ve definitely got you covered!! 

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to plan a proposal, to make your proposal ideas come to life: 

Plan the Date

The date is more important than what you’re probably thinking, because, trust me… There are FACTORS to it!! 

First, think about when you’ll be planning your wedding. Most of my couples are engaged for a year to a year and a half before they actually get married, so if you’ve talked about a specific time of year for your wedding, make sure your proposal date lines up!! 

If that’s not a deciding factor for the date, I’ll always LOVE a meaningful date for your surprise proposal!! The day of your first date, first kiss, or the day you met is always a SUPER romantic proposal idea. 

Choose the Location

Your location is what sets the whole vibe. It determines whether your proposal is public or private, what views you’ll have for pics, and the overall pace of the day. If your partner is someone who wants a scene, go for somewhere public. If you want it to be more private and secluded, somewhere outdoors is always perf!! 

Here are a few proposal locations in NorCal that hit every time:

• In a hotel bar – for a public proposal, I love a hotel bar!! Harbor House Inn’s bar has views for daysss, and trust me, a summer sunset proposal here?? Insane. 
• A vineyard – if Rylie and Zak’s engagement is your inspo, same. A vineyard is always giving elevated, chic vibes, so if that’s what you’re looking for, I recommend somewhere like Domaine Carneros. 

Decide Who’s Involved + Coordinate

Next on the list is to decide if you want your favorite people around or for it to just be the two of you! Both of these options are great for different reasons, but as a Napa Valley engagement photographer, I personally LOVE when it’s just you two for a romantic proposal, then a surprise party with all your people to celebrate afterwards!! 

Have a Backup Plan in Case of Bad Weather

• Go back to your first date spot – because that’s always extremely adorable. When you add meaning to a moment that’s already as big as this, it just makes it even better!! 
• Make it casual – okay, I love aesthetics and grandeur as much as the next person. Sometimes, though… Your proposal doesn’t need all the fuss!! At the end of the day, it’s all about you two and the love you share, and if you two are more simple, honor that!!
• Plan a celebration afterwards – keep the surprise GOING by planning a party with your fave people after you pop the question!! 

However, you end up choosing to propose, just make sure it actually feels like you. The best moments are going to be the ones that feel real, so always be sure to consider both of your personalities when you’re planning!!

I mean, the joy on her face? The mountain views behind them?? The built-in engagement photos afterwards?? I cannot!! It was such a perfect day for these two, and one that reminds me why I LOVE being a Napa Valley engagement photographer so much. 

Zak chose to invite their closest friends and family to watch the moment happen, and it couldn’t have been cuter watching everyone’s reactions. And the celebration over wine afterwards?? Yeah, it was the best!! This day lives rent-free in my mind, so if you want to plan something like this… Know that I’m so here for it.
